EU continues climate efforts, falls shy of binding pact

Debates on the 12 of December stretched into the night yet failed to convince all holdouts to commit to a European Union-wide climate pact which would require all member states to commit to becoming carbon natural by 2050. Securing the commitment of 27 member states, only Poland, whose energy system is still notably dependent on coal, generating fourth fifths of its energy with the polluting material. However, the commitment of 27 of 28 nations sets a strong agenda for the Union as member states drive national-level plans ahead to meet this target. Debates on the goal are set to continue with Poland, the lone exempted state, at a council meeting in June 2020.
