European and Asian cities make up top 10 most sustainable cities
The inaugural Sustainable Cities Index, conducted by the design and engineering consultancy firm ARCADIS for the London-based Center for Economics and Business Research, concluded that the world’s ten most sustainable cities are European and Asian cities. The index assessed world cities according to their relative level of sustainability in three areas: people (transport infrastructure, real-estate prices, life expectancy, and other people related factors), planet (environmental factors), and profit (the city’s economy).
The index considers the cities’ sustainability rankings from an overall perspective as well as within each individual area, concluding that all cities struggle in attaining sustainability and have room for improvement. In addition to the ranking of the world’s top 50 most sustainable cities, ARCADIS also compiled individual city profiles which detail the assessment of each of the three areas of sustainability.
