London reports notable decrease in first month of ultra-low-carbon-zone
One month into the London’s effort to cut the amount of carbon-emitting vehicles operating in its central areas, the number of heavy polluters entering the so called ultra-low emissions zone has decreased an average of 9 400 vehicles a day when compared with totals from only a month ago. On the whole, the number of heavy-emissions vehicles in the area had dropped by 36 000 from February 2017 when the plans were first announced. This impact is estimated to be a combined effect of vehicles no longer entering the central areas and the transition of many delivery companies to cleaner vehicles in the interim.
The £12.50 congestion charge on heavy polluters shows signs of success early in its life, yet the total impact will only be seen in the long run when its impact on the reduction of harmful emissions will truly become clear.
