WALCC holds Forum in Zhuhai, China

2020 marked a year of postponements and virtual alternatives for the World Alliance for Low Carbon Cities with its Spring Forum in China canceled earlier this year and its Autumn Forum scheduled to be held in Stockholm, Sweden postponed to 2021. Following the WALCC’s Annual General Meeting, held virtually on October 13th, the next held by the Alliance saw a return to familiar tradition with the 19th World Low Carbon Urban Development Forum hosted, in-person, in Zhuhai, China from December 25th to 27th.

The Forum was held in Zhuhai at the Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Campus’s International Exchange Center in collaboration with Beijing Normal University. The Forum addressed the theme of “Building Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Low Carbon Green Sustainable Development Bay Area”, with an aim to actively explore and implement green and low-carbon practices in the development of an eco-bay area.

Alongside WALCC founder and Honorary Chairman Professor Kang Feiyu of Tsinghua University and Professor Kong Ying, Tsinghua University, the Forum was opened by speeches from the Forum’s co-host Wang Shoujun, Vice President of Beijing Normal University. The Alliance’s other co-founder and Honorary Chairman Johan Wallin delivered welcome words via pre-recorded video alongside words from the Chinese Academy of Engineering’s Professor Zhai Weidou.

The Forum addressed President Xi Jinping’s recent declaration, at the general debate of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, of China’s increasing of its national contribution and adoption of stronger policies and measures to achieve carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and strive to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2060. The Alliance has, since its founding in 2012, expressed a strong belief in this mission. Professor Kang Feiyu believes this shows China’s firm determination to tackle climate change and establish a sound, green, and low-carbon circular economic system, devoting the Alliance’s support to this effort as a means of actively exploring the improvement of environmental cooperation mechanisms and the promotion of the coordinated development of technologies supporting this goal.

The Alliance extends a warm welcome to all attendees of the Forum in Zhuhai to join us at the next European Forum in 2021!
