EU Covenant of Mayors calls for stepping up climate targets

In a speech on April 21st, 2021, EU Commissioner for energy Kadri Simonson called on cities to take a greater role in the work to mitigate the impact of climate change. Noting that cities are crucial in working together with the EU to drive the energy transition on the ground, taking policies and objectives and turning them into concrete actions. The Covenant of Mayors will now call on signatories in the EU to institute stricter targets for emission cuts and more ambitious climate adaptation targets with an eye towards both 2030 and 2050.

These renewed targets will be complemented by an increased effort to motivate citizens, businesses, and local stakeholders to take action through an EU-wide initiative inviting everyone to take part, the European Climate Pact.
