EU Launches call for pioneer climate-neutral, smart cities

On November 25th, the European Commission announced the launch of a new call intended to attract cities with ambitious climate targets and an intention to reach carbon-neutrality by 2030. Through the call, the Commission will select 100 cities to receive the designation of being pioneering cities, a label that will put the cities in a better position to receive funding in future sustainability-focused calls.

With this mission, the EU hopes to put cities at the forefront of action on climate as it is in city and regional-level decision making, not national, that the true steps towards climate neutrality will be taken. The mission also hopes to form a network of like-minded cities and companies who can support each other and benefit from the advice and assistance of the EU’s Mission Platform.

Submissions are due by the end of January 2022 and the selected 100 cities will be announced in April 2022.
